The Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) is set to launch the International Film Market of Kerala (IFMK), a new industry-focused platform designed to connect regional talent with international producing and financing partners. Scheduled for December 13–16 in Thiruvananthapuram, the market will run parallel to the prestigious International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK).

Malayalam cinema, rooted in Kerala, has long enjoyed critical acclaim for its realism and literary depth, thanks to iconic filmmakers like Adoor Gopalakrishnan and the late Shaji N. Karun. In recent years, the industry has built a reputation for blending artistic storytelling with commercial appeal, capturing audiences in India and abroad. IFMK aims to leverage that momentum to build structured access to global collaboration.

The initiative builds upon the Kerala Film Market, which began in 2023 as a modest knowledge-sharing forum with panels and masterclasses. Over time, the platform evolved organically into a space where filmmakers began pitching projects and forging international alliances. The concept was originally envisioned by Karun, whose films “Piravi,” “Swaham” and “Vanaprastham” screened at Cannes.

“IFMK represents a major stride forward for Kerala’s film ecosystem,” said KSFDC chairman and veteran director K. Madhu. “It offers a professional space where ideas can transform into opportunities.”

The market will include a Project Market for pitching, a Fine Cut Lab for post-production mentorship, industry talks on emerging trends, a video library for films seeking buyers or festival slots, and exhibition booths for film commissions and service providers. Leena Khobragade, former head of Film Bazaar, is onboard as consultant.

“More than an event, IFMK is about building long-term infrastructure,” said KSFDC managing director Priyadarsanan P.S. “It will help Kerala filmmakers step confidently onto the global stage.”
