In an unexpected twist at the Easter weekend box office, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, featuring Michael B. Jordan, outperformed expectations and edged out Warner Bros.’ other major release, A Minecraft Movie. The R-rated period drama opened to a strong $45.6 million from 3,308 theaters, including IMAX screens—well above projections of $40 million. Though early estimates based on Friday’s $19.2 million suggested a more modest result, a surge in Saturday walk-up audiences changed the outcome.
Critically acclaimed with a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 97% and an “A” CinemaScore, Sinners also performed well internationally, adding $15.4 million from select markets for a global debut of $61 million. This marks the best start for an original film since Us in 2019, and the strongest opening of Coogler’s career.
Meanwhile, Minecraft, now in its third weekend, continues to thrive. Despite losing the top spot, it earned $41.3 million domestically and an additional $59 million internationally, bringing its global total to an impressive $720.8 million. It’s the first 2025 release poised to cross the $1 billion mark. Together, both films gave Warner Bros. a dominant 64% share of the Easter box office.
Sinners, set in 1932 Mississippi, tells the story of twin brothers Smoke and Stack—both played by Jordan—who return home with plans to open a juke joint, only to face unforeseen horrors. The film’s appeal has been especially strong among Black audiences, who made up 38% of ticket buyers, followed by white (35%), Latino (18%), Asian (5%), and other groups.
Elsewhere at the box office, Angel Studios’ The King of Kings held third with $17.3 million, Disney’s The Amateur followed with $7.2 million, and A24’s Warfare came in fifth with $4.9 million.
With Sinners’ success, Warner Bros. execs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy seem to have scored a much-needed win after previous misfires, reinforcing their commitment to both original and fan-favorite stories for theatrical release.
