James Gunn’s Superman, the first release under DC Studios led by Gunn and Peter Safran, has soared past the $600 million mark at the global box office, becoming the year’s top-grossing comic book movie. The film reached the milestone on Friday after earning $343.6 million in North America and $256 million overseas. Despite the success, superhero fatigue remains evident as audiences grow more selective, with the genre no longer the guaranteed hit it once was.
The $225 million production is DC’s first major box office win since The Batman in 2022, and the first within the DC Extended Universe to reach this milestone since Aquaman in 2018. Critics and audiences have embraced Gunn’s new vision, which also outperformed rival Marvel titles released this year, including The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts, and Captain America: Brave New World.
Globally, Superman currently ranks sixth among 2025 releases, behind films like Lilo & Stitch and Ne Zha II. Starring David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, the film marks an important step in revitalizing the DC brand after a series of underperforming titles.
