Quentin Tarantino has clarified why he is not directing Netflix’s upcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood follow-up, which will instead be helmed by David Fincher. Speaking on The Church of Tarantino podcast, the filmmaker explained that he wanted his 10th and final movie to explore new ground, rather than revisit familiar territory.
“I love this script, but I’m still walking the same path I’ve already walked. My last film needs to feel uncharted,” he said. The new project will see Brad Pitt reprise his role as stuntman Cliff Booth from Tarantino’s 2019 film, though Fincher will be in charge of direction.
Tarantino, who wrote the script and will serve as producer, said Fincher’s involvement is both flattering and reassuring. “I think me and David Fincher are the two best directors. The fact that he wants to adapt my work shows a seriousness toward it,”
Tarantino explained. He also revealed why he shelved The Movie Critic, once expected to be his final feature. Originally conceived as a film or TV series, Tarantino described it as a “spiritual sequel” to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, though it would not have featured Cliff Booth.
